Rose and Her Basket of Love
A new friend arrives at WFA: Rosemary, a gentle hummingbird. Instead of running or playing, she works hard, carefully weaving little baskets. Chester asks if a basket is for snacks, but Rosemary says, “It’s for love.” Hermie shares her wisdom, Chester his clever ideas, Abby her courage and Winter her patience. The Pack shares baskets with others at WFA and then with neighbors, until the whole community shines with love. “True wealth,” Rosemary says, “comes when we weave love and purpose into what we share.”
🌟 The Warda Way lesson
The Warda Way teaches us that:
- Gentleness is powerful.
- Hard work can create beauty.
- Sharing makes us rich.
- Even the smallest acts of love can fill the world with joy.
🎯 Objectives
Children will be able to:
- Explain what Rosemary means by a basket “for love.”
- Name what each friend shared (wisdom, clever ideas, courage, patience).
- Connect hard work to making something beautiful.
- Plan and do a small act of love for someone else.
📖 Read-aloud guide
- Before reading: ask, “What would you put in a basket for someone you love?”
- When Chester asks if it’s for snacks, let your child guess what it is for.
- As each friend shares a gift, hold up a finger and name it.
- Read Rosemary’s whispers softly to show gentleness.
- Finish with the Warda Way lesson page and the dedication.
💬 Discussion questions
- Why do you think Rosemary wove baskets instead of running and playing?
- What did Hermie, Chester, Abby and Winter each share?
- How did the friends at WFA feel about the baskets at first? And later?
- What does “Sharing makes us rich” mean?
- What small act of love could you do this week?
✏️ Reading & writing
Love notes: write (or dictate) a short note to someone, telling them one kind thing. Younger children draw a heart and write their name. Put the notes in your basket.
🔢 Math & logic
Weaving patterns: cut paper strips in two colors and weave them over-under. Name the pattern (AB, AB). Count the strips. Older children: if each basket needs 6 strips, how many strips for 4 baskets?
💛 Character & values
Gifts we share: make a chart with each family member and one non-thing gift they can share (patience, help, a joke, a hug), like the Pack did.
✂️ Hands-on project
Basket of love: weave a small paper basket (or decorate a berry box). Fill it with your love notes and drawings, and give it to a neighbor, grandparent or friend.
